IN THE RAW 8: Kvlt Games

With a motto of "microaggressions not microtransactions", Kvlt are making games that are anything but politically correct.

Welcome back to IN THE RAW, my friends. I made a promise that I would bring you as interesting a variety of guests as I can, and this week we have Roland, the founder of Kvlt Games. Kvlt are famous — or should I say, notorious? — as the makers of Heimat Defender, a retro shooter which so incensed the German government they forced the world’s biggest game-distribution app, Steam, to remove the game. Despite this rather serious setback, the game has been downloaded over 50,000 times.

Kvlt are currently working on a new game called The Great Rebellion, in a similar mold to Heimat Defender. Here’s how the Kvlt website describes the game:

The Great Rebellion is a politically nonconform Run’n’Gun with 360° aiming and twin-stick controls, set in a dystopian Cyberpunk future and featuring a set of Roguelike elements: random level generation, many weapons and items to find. Making sure no two playthroughs are the same!

Battle your way through the hordes of the evil Globohomo Corporation’s minions and free Europa – the time has come for
The Great Rebellion!

Roland and I talk about our favourite games, the state of the industry today, the challenges and opportunities of being an indie developer and political censorship of art and culture.

Visit the Kvlt website to download Heimat Defender for free, and also visit the Great Rebellion website for updates on the new game. Follow Kvlt on Twitter (@gr8_rebellion) and join the Telegram channel.
