Hi can you please say who the British artist is you mention at around the 10 minute mark? You say the name too quickly to hear; it sounds like "De Villiers" or something

Another enlightening and highly interesting episode. I had myself known of Lewis's name, but had never read any of his writing, or been exposed to any of his art. So before I listened to the episode, I read the Wikipedia entry on his life and work, and checked out some of his writing on my personal favorite literary site, fadedpage.com. The small amount I looked at, Lewis would be a wonderful subject, if you wanted to concentrate on an individual author or painter for study or appreciation. (Great line from "A Soldier Of Humour" from The Wild Body - belongs in a book of famous quotations - "Freud explains everything by sex: I explain everything by laughter". Lewis's portrait of Ezra Pound - shown in the Wikipedia article - is a truly striking painting.)

I think the high point of your discussion with your guest was the analysis (based on prophetic insights that Lewis seems to have had) that the worsening decline Anglo-American and Western European societies are experiencing, has its beginnings in the "civilizational exhaustion" of those societies following WWI, which resulted in the inability to withstand the gradual, over decades, introduction of cultural ideas and values (from inside or from parts of the world outside the West) destructively incompatible with the West's. Again, interesting and thought-provoking.
