Your guest addressed an important truth: any art whose primary purpose is to espouse a political view or ideology, right or left, is trash, plain and simple. Art, to be art, must above all, entertain and, hopefully, elevate the spirit, intellect, or emotion of the reader, viewer, or listener. If the art succeeds in that, whatever politics the artist has will flow organically into the creation.
And therein lies the rub, for me at least. I've found such a small proportion of the fiction, poetry, music, painting, etc. I've personally encountered, that's been created during my lifetime, that's even been able to hold my attention or interest (not taking into consideration the political content). I wholly agree with your guest that a critical measure of the state of a civilization is the state of the art it produces. So here's a question: is it just a circumstance of my own dispositional attitude, that I actively dislike most all contemporary art, or is our civilization actually in something of a bad way?
